EBay Expert Says Hankies Are Hot

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – You can sell just about anything on eBay, but a Brooklyn-based eBay expert says if you want to easily make hundreds of dollars, get your hands on some handkerchiefs.

Alyssa Ettinger, the author of a home decorating manual called The eBay Home Makeover (Watson-Guptill), says of all the things she’s sold on eBay, “The handkerchiefs went for a crazy amount. A 25-cent handkerchief went for 25 to 50 dollars. Crazy!”

She says the trick is to scour estate sales for hankies and wash and iron them before selling.

The former magazine editor admits she’d sometimes ask herself, “How did ironing become my life?” but then would shrug off any doubts when she realized, “I made nine or 10 times what I put in.”

Ettinger also hit the eBay jackpot when a cookie mold she picked up for 10 cents went for $122.50, but she admits not all her online auction experiences have been perfect.

As she puts it, “I had a crazy lunatic buyer. She never paid sellers and then she pretended like she died. Her husband sent out these e-mails saying, ‘My wife died.’ Luckily, I hadn’t sent her the product yet.”
