Sword Swallowers Hope Not To Choke During World Record Attempt

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Sword swallowers will be chomping at the bit to set a new Guinness world record at the 4th Annual Sideshow Gathering and Sword Swallowers’ Convention in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Sept. 2.

Dan Meyer, spokesman for the Sword Swallowers Association International, says the blade biters have to swallow more than 50 blades simultaneously to break the current record set back on August 30, 2002.

While lubing up the swords with cooking oil to get them down easier is acceptable, Meyer says keeping them slick isn’t the problem.

He says the problem is not triggering the gag reflex, which may be harder than you think.

The swords need to be longer than 15 inches and at least three-quarters of an inch in width to qualify. Meyer says, “That gets rid of kids trying to stick a table knife down their throat.”

Besides plain sword swallowing, Meyer says there may be other records set at the event by fire eaters; stunt artists who lay on beds of nails; and a man who can crack a whip while swallowing a sword.
