Bob Costas: Not Always A Heavyweight But Always A Good Sport

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Bob Costas has always been a good sport but he wasn’t always a heavyweight in the broadcasting world.

Costas – who just signed a contract that keeps him at NBC until 2012 – says even though he’s been at the network since 1979, execs didn’t look at him as their golden boy.

In fact, his first gig at the network was “some sort of international power-lifting event” and claims it “pretty much set the mold for my career at NBC – because when people think Bob Costas, they think power- lifting.”

The event wasn’t easy for Costas though. Many of the athletes didn’t speak English and one competitor had such a big stomach that “you were in contact with his navel, but his head was another 10 feet away.”

NBC is making up for the weighty challenges Costas faced in his early years. The new contract makes him the host of the network’s Sunday night NFL show beginning in 2006 as well as the 2012 London Olympic Games.
