No Pussyfooting Around For Hemingway’s Cats

KEY WEST, Fla. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Missed the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain, earlier this month? Then you won’t want to miss “The Running of the Cats.”

That’s an event where 60 cats will run towards a big bowl of cat food tomorrow (Jul. 21) at the Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Florida, as part of the city’s 25th annual Ernest Hemingway Days celebration.

About half the cats on the property are polydactyl – meaning they have extra toes – and a few are descendants of Hemingway’s own six-toed tabby.

Museum event director Linda Mendez fancies the idea of those polydactyl paws running toward the food, but says, “Do you know how hot it is here?! And they wear fur coats. We’re going to have to entice them.”

Even if the kitties don’t run, Mendez insists that cat abuse is not allowed, so instead of being whipped with a cat o’ nine tails, the cats will get positive motivators like tuna and wet food.

Mendez thinks Hemingway will be smiling down on the cat event, saying, “Oh yeah, he’s always here in spirit.”
