Al Jardine Sailing ‘Sloop John B.” Into Children’s Book

BIG SUR, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Former Beach Boy Al Jardine is sailing in a new direction – children’s book author.

The man who sang “Help Me Rhonda” is the author of Sloop John B. (Milk And Cookies Press) and helped himself to the lyrics of the 1965 hit, “Sloop John B.,” which is based on a traditional folk song Jardine introduced to the band.

Although Jardine expected adapting the song to a story to be a cruise, he admits it wasn’t smooth sailing because, as he puts it, “I thought I ended it nicely but the publisher said, ‘No, it must be 32 pages.’”

Still, Jardine is happy about the final product and hopes the book is successful enough so he gets to try turning Beach Boy ditties like “Take A Load Off Your Feet, Pete” or “Vegetables” into kid literature.
