American Idol Producer Nigel Lythgoe Mislabeled ‘A Fairy’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Being known as “Nasty Nigel” is no big deal for American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. The former dancer has been called “a fairy” since he was a kid.

In his own words, “My father was a Liverpool docker. I was a fairy for dancing.”

Though his twinkle toes led him to a successful choreography career in London, Lythgoe feels that he would have been more embraced in the U.S. He says, “No one ever called Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly a fairy!”

Lythgoe’s next producing project is the upcoming FOX show, So You Think You Can Dance, but don’t expect any nasty dances designed by Lythgoe. He says those days are over and would rather reminisce about his days choreographing for The Muppets.

Lythgoe says there are many things viewers can look forward to, including some hilarious auditions. He compares his reaction to some performances not to his 2003 heart attack, but the time his appendix exploded, saying, “Yeah, I had a similar feeling to that.”

So You Think You Can Dance premieres July 20.
