Character Names All Greek To ‘Hercules’ Stars

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Starring in a movie called Hercules can be a heavy weight on an actor’s shoulders, but actor Paul Telfer found the character names harder than the strongman feats.

Telfer plays Hercules in the NBC TV-movie airing May 16 and admits he and his fellow cast and crew had a hard time pronouncing names like “Amphitryon,” “Asurybus,” or his character’s lover, “Deianeira,” played by Leelee Sobieski.

As the British actor tells it, “I tried ‘Di-yan- nara,’ ‘Dee-an-nyra’ before settling on ‘Dey- yan-nayra,’ which I think sounds the prettiest.”

By comparison, Sobieski didn’t have much trouble with the name game. Not only is Hercules easy to pronounce but she adds, “I never had to say my own name.”

Although Telfer had his mouth full with the names, he says he had it easier than some of his cast members, who ruined whole takes by mispronouncing “Asurybus,” a three-headed lion Hercules battles in the movie.
