Steve Wilson of The World Laughter Tour, Inc., which holds classes to teach people the art of laughing, has compelling evidence that laughter may be the best medicine to shed pounds and treat other types of health issues.
Wilson says studies show one minute of busting a gut laughing is the cardiovascular equivalent of 10 minutes on a treadmill, and burns about 2.66 calories.
He says laughing also stretches the muscles and joints, and is a great abdominal exercise when you laugh through your nose.
Wilson says laughter can also reduce stress, which is why one of his trained laughter leaders, a colonel at the Department of Defense, gives laughter classes to family members of reservists who have been called to duty.
And next month, Wilson will be training laughter leaders who will give classes at cancer treatment centers.
