Crappy Cathedral In Peril

Friday, March 26, 2010 17:20 GMT

AUSTIN, Texas (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The fight to save one junky building is underway, and it’s a serious crapshoot.

The Cathedral of Junk in Austin, Texas – around since 1988 – is a structure made completely of discarded objects like old bikes, shopping carts, and broken televisions.

After years of delighting tourists and locals, the Cathedral is in danger of being bulldozed to the ground by city officials who insist that owner Vince Hannemann get a permit and certificate of occupancy by Wednesday (Mar. 31).

Hannemann admits it can’t be done, and that’s real crappy.

He’s hoping to catch a break and has a team of volunteers helping him get the building up to code. They’re running savethejunk.org to spread the word.

However, there’s a real chance the Cathedral will be demolished.

Hannemann laments, “A lot of tears will be shed. It’ll be a sad day for not only me, but for the entire city of Austin.”
