So says NASA-certified supersniffer George Aldrich, whos a judge for the 34th Annual National Odor Eaters Rotten Sneaker Contest happening Tuesday (Mar. 24) in Mount Pelier, Vermont.
Aldrich has been a sniffer for the competition for 10 years, and the horrible stenches hes crossed are starting to take a toll on his body.
He says, The more pungent smells actually bite. My nose burns and my eyes water from the putrid, cheesy smell. Ive been getting a weaker stomach the last couple years. Ill actually gag at some of the shoes.
It takes Aldrich around three days to get his sense of smell back in working order after judging the event and he often suffers from olfactory fatigue.
He explains, My nose goes weak and all the sneakers start to smell the same, but I learned from a perfumer to sniff the back of my hand to cleanse the nasal passages.
