Swallowing Can’t Be Faked

HARTSELLE, Ala. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A true swallower never fakes it.

This Saturday (Feb. 28), the few dozen sword swallowers that exist around the world are celebrating International Sword Swallower’s Awareness Day and proving that there’s nothing fake about the hobby.

Dan Meyer, president of Sword Swallowers Association International, says, “People have a hard time believing that someone would risk their life for entertainment. Some just don’t believe it’s real. We want to prove to those people that sword swallowing is real. It’s not like the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus.

Meyer says audiences have become so jaded about his beloved hobby that they often come up to him after shows and call him a phony.

He laments, “I prove the swords are real by cutting oranges and cucumbers beforehand, but inevitably someone will still say it’s not real. It’s the real deal. Everytime I swallow a sword I think it this is gonna be the one that kills me. Maybe then it’ll prove it.”
