The bad boy actor plays a dual role in My Own Worst Enemy, a TV series about a man with split personalities.
One of his characters is a humdrum average Joe, while the other is an operative who speaks 13 languages and is trained to kill.
To talk the talk, Slater has been working with dialect coaches and listening to foreign language CDs.
So far, hes learned to speak Chinese, Russian, and German and says repetition is key when studying languages.
When hes not speaking in tongues, Slater is rehearsing stunts for the action spy show, which includes gun battles and fight scenes.
He says the shoot-offs remind him of being a kid, when he used to play guns in his backyard, and hopes the fight training helps him reach his real life goal of becoming a black belt in karate.
My Own Worst Enemy premieres tonight (Oct. 13) on NBC.
