It might seem like an oxymoron, but rail rider Adman Waters says hobos hate the word bum because it makes them sound like lowlifes.
He explains, The difference between a bum and a hobo is a bum will take a newspaper and stuff it down his shirt to stay warm. A hobo will do the same thing, but theyll read the paper first!
Waters has been jumping trains since 1972 and says being a hobo is all about the freedom of the open road.
He continues, Hobos have a choice they choose their path. Bums are either trapped in their addiction or situation and dont travel. Its all about being self- sufficient.
Waters has settled down, but admits he still jumps trains several times a year and is excited about new generations carrying on an American tradition.
He says, We call the new kids the Flintstones because of their crazy piercings and they call us the Ancients.
Thousands of people will show their drifter appreciation at the 108th annual National Hobo Convention in Britt, Iowa, which runs tomorrow (Aug. 8) through Sunday (Aug. 10).
