So says firecracker enthusiast Greg Moyer, who has just put together Firecrackers! An Eye-Popping Collection Of Chinese Firework Art (Ten Speed Press), a book showcasing vintage firecracker labels from the 1950s and 1960s.
Firecrackers originated in China, and according to Moyer, have been used for decades to turn holidays, parties, weddings, and even funerals into lucky occasions.
He explains, Theyre a symbol of positivity and are used to ward off demons. The loud noise from the firecrackers is said to scare demons away.
Moyer whos been collecting firecracker art since he was nine years old and owns thousands of labels likes to bring a little luck to his hometown of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by putting on his own firecracker displays.
Hes been a licensed pyrotechnician for 36 years and puts on fireworks shows for birthdays, New Years Eve, and other special events in his town.
Firecrackers! explodes onto shelves this Fourth of July.
