Dandelion Fest Packs Flower Power

DOVER, Ohio (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Some flowers are good enough to eat.

This Friday (May 2) and Saturday (May 3), 10,000 people will head to the Breitenbach Winery in Dover, Ohio, for the 15th Annual Dandelion Festival – but this isn’t your typical flower-picking party.

Guests can feast on delicacies like bratwurst, potato pancakes, wedding soup, and even gravy and mashed potatoes, all made with the petals, stems, and even roots of dandelions.

Spokesperson Anita Davis says despite the dandelion’s bitterness, the flower foods are fantastic.

She says, “When you ladle the dandelion gravy out, you see long, stringy green stems, and it doesn’t look so good. But it’s great.”

There’s also a dandelion cook-off, where competitors vie for a $500 prize by cooking gourmet dandelion dishes like flowery quiche and pasta.

And while the dandelion picking contest is a favorite with the kids, it’s the dandelion wine and sangria that keeps adults feeling dandy.
