Prom Night Brings Bad Fashion Memories

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Proms can be unpredictable, but one thing’s for sure: Bad prom fashion is bound to happen.

According to Elissa Stein, author of Prom Night: The Best Night Of Your Life (Chronicle Books), people who have great memories of their proms cringe when they see the outdated outfits, hairstyles, and make-up they wore on their big night – herself included.

When Stein went to the prom in 1980, her date sported a cream and brown velvet-trimmed tuxedo, cane, and top hat that forever earned him the nickname Mr. Peanut.

To this day, Stein cringes when she looks at her prom pictures and sees her date donning the nutty outfit.

Every decade has its fashion failures, but she thinks that the 80s take the cake for awful prom fashion, from the shoulder pad dresses to the big, wacky hairstyles.

She says, “Pictures from 80s proms have a super-cringe factor.”

Stein thinks the 1950s were the best decade for prom fashion because the duds were so “innocent and age- appropriate.”

She explains, “The boys looked like Buddy Holly and the girls wore these beautiful, poofy, strapless dresses and pearls. It was very classy.”

She also thinks the 1970s were a cool prom decade because people were so risky and outrageous with their threads.
