Author Takes Rocky Path To Enlightenment

RICHMOND, Va. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One author’s path to spiritual enlightenment nearly cost him his head.

In his book The 99th Monkey: A Spiritual Journalist’s Misadventures with Gurus, Messiahs, Sex, Psychedelics, and Other Consciousness-Raising Experiments (Santa Monica Press), Eliezer Sobel recounts 30 years searching for enlightenment, experimenting with mind-altering drugs and meditation,

He says, “I spent 40 days in a cabin on a mountain alone, and I nearly went out of my mind. My experiences with psychedelic drugs were not always successful either. I once woke up on my kitchen table after taking mushrooms, and I was scratching my last words onto the wood, which were a goodbye to my wife. I thought I was going to die.”

But it’s his experiences with overweight people that really took the author out of his head.

Sobel explains, “I was in therapy with a very overweight therapist who decided I had been smothered by my mother, so she made me lay on the floor and sat on my head for 30 minutes.”
