Small Town Murders Create Mystery

LANGLEY, Wash. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – People in Langley, Washington, are fearing for their lives.

The 24th Annual Murder Mystery Weekend is happening this weekend (Feb. 23-24), and it continues the tradition of everyone in the tiny town getting together to solve a made-up murder.

Participants pick up clues around Langley and use the newspaper – which is only distributed once a year – to search out possible suspects.

Nancy Rowan, executive director of the event, says, “We only have one murder a year, so our newspaper only comes out once a year. After the crime is solved, the sheriff arrests the killer, then there’s no murder until next year.”

And according to Rowan, thousands end up involved in the mystery, whether they mean to or not.

She says, “Most people in town know it’s a hoax, but we get people who come to the visitors’ center concerned that there’s a crime scene on the street. We also used to use our victim’s real name, but then the news picked it up as an actual murder, and it left a lot of family members traumatized.”
