Michael Bolton Relives Days As A Struggling Musician

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Michael Bolton may be a smooth-singin’ icon, but once upon a time, he was a struggling unknown.

Bolton is one of five celebrities, including Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland, and Blake Shelton, competing to make a professional choir out of 20 amateur singers in NBC’s new mini reality series, Clash of the Choirs, and when Bolton flew to his hometown of New Haven, Connecticut, to audition singers, it reminded him of the tough times when he struggled through to make it in the music biz.

Bolton explains, “I auditioned singers for Clash of the Choirs at a club in New Haven that was two miles from where I used to live. It was really intense being back home, because it reminded me of the times I sang just to put food on the table. When the weather was awful and it was snowing, my shows would get canceled and I couldn’t make any money. Those were really hard times.”

But now, after decades of singing smash hits like “When A Man Loves A Woman,” the Grammy-winning soft rocker says he’s “very lucky” to finally be successful doing what he loves.

Clash of the Choirs premieres Monday (Dec. 17) on NBC.
