Disney Channel Mom Plays Pretend

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – For actress Maria Canals Barrera, playing pretend on the set of her new Disney Channel show was easy thanks to practice sessions with her four-year-old daughter.

Barrera plays a mortal mom raising a family of wizards on the new Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, and says her toddler daughter has helped her practice her pretending for the gig.

Barrera explains, “My daughter totally gets that I’m just pretending to be a mommy to wizards on the show. It makes sense because if you think about it, kids pretend all day long. I’ll come home and my daughter is like, ‘Okay Mom, you’re the baby giraffe and I’m the giant lizard.’ If you ask her a question and she’s still playing, she won’t answer. I have to be like, ‘Okay baby giraffe, do you want some mac and cheese?’ She’s the master of pretending, so she understands mommy’s job is to pretend on TV.”

And Barrera has even brought her daughter to tapings of Wizards so she can see Mom’s pretending skills in action.

She adds, “I’ve introduced her to my pretend daughter, sons, and husband, and she’s cool with it. She loves coming to work with me, but it may have something to do with the huge cooler of ice cream they keep on the set!”

Wizards of Waverly Place premieres this Friday (Oct. 12).
