Carnies Search For Their American Dream

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One adventurous author just lived out the classic American dream of running away with the circus.

Investigative author Harmon Leon is working on his latest book, The American Dream (Nation Books), where he travels the country living out people’s perceptions of what the American dream might be by experiencing different things, like being a circus Carnie.

Under his alias, “Ajax,” Leon recently spent a week living among circus workers and says that Carnie life is stranger than he’d imagined.

Says Leon: “Carnies are a subculture of America whose dream is to live outside of the mainstream. They love the idea of moving from town to town, completely under the radar. It’s a whole other world!”

Leon was admitedly “shocked and scared” throughout his Carnie infiltration, but he still had some good times too.

He says, “I learned Carnie slang, how to scam customers into spending their money at my circus booth, and how to sleep in a trailer behind a Tilt-A-Whirl. It was quite the experience!”

And Leon even found time to make friends with an ol’ Carnie veteran.

Leon adds, “When a guy that had been a Carnie for 30 years offered to buy me a corndog, I knew I was in.”

The American Dream hits shelves in 2008.
