The 6th Annual Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge is an eccentric event that races into town this Saturday (July 14), pitting roughly 400 crabby crustacean contestants in heats to beat their clawed competitors down an eight-foot racetrack.
And while the star athletes may be crabby, there are specific rules set to ensure a good, clean, hard-fought crab battle.
As event director Mike Hilton puts it, Owners arent allowed to pound [on the racetrack], but they can scream and yell all they want.
Instead, race officials spray reluctant racers with water bottles to keep the competition cool and cruising.
And even though race organizers shell out a medal to every hearty hermit, some proud crab owners take it a pinch futher by dressing up their eight-legged sprinters in costumes or painting their shells.
