Cowell is currently producing the second season of American Inventor a competition to find the next amazing gadget and he insists the stakes on the show are much higher than those on American Idol.
Says Cowell: These inventors have poured so much time and personal money into their products that its really quite tragic when they dont make it through the competition. They lose their dreams in an instant, and its pretty sad and sometimes uncomfortable to watch.
With its share of turmoil, Cowell calls American Inventor the thinking mans American Idol, but admits auditions for the show are just as bizarre and hilarious as your typical Idol reject tryouts.
He explains, About 70 percent of people who try to get on the show have absolutely insane ideas and presentations. Weve had people try to sell us on everything from flying cars to engines that run on salt water. One guy nearly beat up the judges claiming his invention was the wheel, which was clearly already invented hundreds of years ago. It was ridiculous but extremely funny.
American Inventor starring George Foreman premieres June 5 on ABC.
