Things Get Gritty In St. George, South Carolina

ST. GEORGE, S.C. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Things are getting pretty gritty in St. George, South Carolina, starting today (Apr. 13), especially for football coach Ned Berry.

The town is holding its’ 22nd Annual World Grits Festival and the highlight will be the Quaker Instant Grits Roll on Sunday (Apr. 15), where gritty competitors see who can collect the most pounds of grits by rolling around in them for 10 seconds.

Berry has competed in the Grits Roll for 20 years and has come in second or third numerous times, gathering about 38 pounds each time.

However, he’s never won the whole thing, and that’s his gritty goal for this year.

Berry’s game plan is to wear coveralls, as well as sweatpants and sweatshirts that are turned inside out “because the fuzzy side is stickier and collects more grits.”

But the key will be in the last second, when he grabs as many grits as possible and shoves them down his shirt.

If Berry wins this year, he will receive $200, a mouthful of grits and, even better, bragging rights over all the other grits gatherers.
