Old Timers Can Learn New Songs

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Aging rockstars can be a sorry sight – unless they begin their career already grey.

Take the Young @ Heart Chorus, a 22-coot choir from Northampton, Massachusetts, whose ages range from 73 to 93.

Their modern repertoire includes songs from Sonic Youth, Led Zeppelin, and the Flaming Lips.

Bob Cilman, the group’s artistic director, says having the oldsters go young started out of necessity: The singers ran out of classics, and found newer material got a positive reaction from college students.

As a result, the Young @ Heart Chorus has toured worldwide, and attracted very fervent groupies.

Says Cilman: ”We had one show in Berlin, where we had someone from the audience jump on stage and start to kiss one of our performers.

Stardom isn’t the only cause for concern. Cilman admits members still suffer for their art, by either falling on wires during performances or sleeping through song cues.
