Thats the gospel according to theologian Dr. Mark Chironna, who says devout football fans can be so faithful to their team that their own self esteem rises and falls based on what happens on the field.
As he puts it, They find their support outside of themselves rather than looking inwardly.
That means the fans of the losing team could feel depressed following the game, but fans of the winning team may also feel let down when the joy of the championship wears off and they realize nothing in their lives has really changed.
Chironna says whenever someone achieves something great, theres a risk of a severe letdown if they dont set new goals.
He suggests fans prepare for life after the Super Bowl by getting involved in community activities in order to continue the camaraderie and civic pride built up by the Super Bowl hype.
