Hunter S. Thompson’s Illustrator Calls Their Partnership ‘Chalk And Cheese’

LONDON (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Ralph Steadman is best known as the wild illustrator for Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, among other “gonzo” works – and he says the secret to their partnership was the mix of “chalk and cheese.”

Steadman was first assigned to work as an illustrator to Thompson’s journalism work for the 1970 Kentucky Derby – and it was the beginning of a popular but weird partnership which Thompson described as “a decadent mixture of chalk and cheese.”

In Steadman’s words: “Hunter hated a sloppy drunk – which he accused me of being; but by the end of the week at the Kentucky Derby, we both were.”

He adds: “I suppose that’s where my chalk part came in – he saw I did my best work frayed out around the edges.”

Steadman recently authored The Joke’s Over: Aspen Nights: Ralph Steadman On Hunter S. Thompson (Harcourt).
