Surfing In California Is For The Dogs

CORONADO, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Surfing is going to the dogs.

At least it will be in Coronado, California, on Sunday (Aug. 20).

The beach city is hosting what is believed to be the first ever surfing competition for dogs.

Organizer Anne Stephany says the “Surf Dog” event will feature dogs of all sizes riding waves while professional surf instructors judge them on their surf styles, confidence, and the length of their ride.

Stephany believes German Shepherds may have an edge in the competition since, in her words, “They are bigger and have fairly good balance on surf boards.”

The winning dog will get a special surf dog trophy and the other canine contestants will enjoy pet-pedicures and doggie treats.

But there will be other “doggy diversions” for the schnauzers who don’t surf, including a furry fashion show, featuring bowsers wearing bikinis and board shorts.
