Ian Gillan Holds ‘Smoke On The Water’ Contest

FARO, Portugal (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Most everyone with a guitar knows the riff to the Deep Purple classic “Smoke On The Water,” and now some lucky guitarist will get a chance to strut their strings on stage.

Lead singer Ian Gillan embarks on a U.S. solo tour on August 16 in Buffalo, New York, and he’s offering fans a chance to join him onstage to jam on the classic rock song.

Guitarists and vocalists are asked to upload their renditions to and the top musicians will win a trip to Las Vegas to perform with Gillan on September 17.

Gillan cowrote the song with Ritchie Blackmore back in 1971 after witnessing a fire started by a flare gun during a Frank Zappa concert at the Montreaux Casino in Montreaux, Switzerland.

He says the town has a plaque honoring the band because the hit song “put Montreaux on the map.”

But while the riff is relatively simple to learn, Gillan can’t offer any tips to aspiring musicians because, as he laments, “I don’t play guitar. I’m a singer.”
