‘Strangers With Candy’ Director Says Wheelchair Joke Accidently Funny

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The writer-director of the upcoming Strangers With Candy movie claims the film’s funniest – and most politically incorrect – scene was a “happy accident.”

Strangers With Candy was a short-lived but acclaimed television series on Comedy Central co-created by Paul Lindell, Steven Colbert and Amy Sedaris, all of whom reprise their characters in the screen version.

But the movie’s scene-stealer is a hilariously awkward cameo by Kristen Johnston, playing a gym coach paralyzed after “running with the bulls in Pamplona” who hasn’t quite mastered her electric wheelchair yet.

Lindell says that, at first, Johnston “really WAS having trouble hitting her mark” in the motorized chair, and “her misses had everyone on set just dying laughing.”

After several ruined takes, Lindell explains, “That’s when I suddenly had the idea to just write it into the scene.”

Lindell kids that if the scene provokes the wrath of the PC police, he can honestly say, “It wasn’t on purpose.”

Strangers With Candy opens nationwide on Wednesday (June 28).
