NFL Wives Make Great Handymen

SAGINAW, Mich. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Here’s a little-known fact: NFL wives make great handymen.

Just ask Shannon O’Toole, the wife of a former Oakland Raiders coach, and author of the new book, Wedded to the Game: The Real Lives of NFL Women (University of Nebraska Press).

O’Toole compiled stories from dozens of NFL wives including Jacqueline Rice – Jerry Rice’s wife – and Kim Courtley – Hall-of-Famer Mike Singletary’s wife – to emphasize how strong NFL women have to be.

O’Toole admits she got wise to the fact that she’d have to be a do-it-yourself woman when the Raiders’ coaches wives gave her a set of tools at her bridal shower.

One door frame, half a dozen wall-anchored drapery rods and two six-foot built-in attic shelves later she says, “Oh, this is what they were talking about.”

Another NFL wife tells her that she “learned to move furniture with her buns.”

But as O’Toole reveals, the strength of NFL wives isn’t always physical.

One NFL wife told O’Toole she shouldered the burden of her daughter’s rape by refraining from telling her husband so he could focus on his game.
