Bob Denver Sails Into The Sunset

PRINCETON, W.V. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The man who played Gilligan has finally sailed into the sunset at the age of 70.

Actor Bob Denver died yesterday (Sept. 6) of complications from cancer treatment. Denver also went through quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year and had his voicebox removed this past April, leaving him speechless.

Nevertheless, Denver will live on thanks to Gilligan’s Island, which despite having only 98 episodes is one of the most popular reruns ever.

Not bad considering Denver didn’t think a series the show would fly. He initially figured a series set on an island would run out of plotlines but changed his mind when Gilligan’s Island creator Sherwood Schwartz reeled off 60 plots in a few minutes.

Other Denver data for his little buddies....

  • Before he made it big as an actor, Denver worked as a mailman for Jerry Lewis and Mel Blanc.

  • Gilligan’s first name was actually “Willy.”

  • Finally, no one has ever found the actual locale of Gilligan’s Island, but 30,000 people once petitioned Hawaiian officials to change the name of the island of Maui to Gilligan’s Island.
