In fact, the person who can spit a watermelon seed the farthest will walk away with $500 at the Luling Watermelon Thump on Saturday (Jun. 25).
The honor of spitting that very first seed goes to the festivals newly-crowned Thump Queen, picked from the local high school. These girls are no slackers festival organizer Trey Bailey says last years queen spit a respectable 30-something feet.
After Her Highness hocks the first seed, contestants line up and proceed to spit regulation Black Diamond watermelon seeds along a designated spitway on Main Street.
Anyone who beats the world record mark of 68-feet, 9-inches, set by local Lee Wheeler in 1989, wins an additional $500.
But seed-spitting isnt just profitable. It can also get you places.
Just three years ago, Bailey and his family were flown to Burbank, California, to spit watermelon seeds down the aisles of Steve Harveys talk show.
