The U.S. Congress enacted the day in 1952, and in 1988, Ronald Reagan set the date as the first Thursday in May.
But Mark Thomas, president of the Atheists of Silicon Valley in California, calls the day a federally funded annual abuse of the constitution.
Thomas advocates separation of church and state so thats why he and other atheists will celebrate the day by speaking to Christian high school students about atheism and the scientific theory of evolution.
He says he presents evolutionary evidence to the students like the fact whales were once land mammals with hind legs and still have legs that are just encased in skin.
The atheist also says goose bumps are proof of human evolution: They fluffed up the hair of our hairy ancestors to keep them warm, but no longer serve a purpose today.
Although Thomas doesnt expect to change anyones mind in five minutes, he hopes to put them on the path to discovering more about evolution.
