Dogs Have Leg Up On Surfing

LA JOLLA, Calif. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Having a couple extra paws to stand on gives dogs a leg up in surfing.

Alyssa Neubarth is an instructor who teaches pooches to catch waves through the new “Surf Pup Program” run by the Surf Diva school in San Diego.

She says canines have natural poise and agility on a surfboard, and their four legs can give them extra balance while riding a wave.

So far, the best surfers are sporty dogs like labs, golden retrievers, and terriers, but it really depends on a pup’s personality and how comfortable they are in the water.

During Neubarth’s half-hour doggy lessons, masters also learn a few tricks.

She teaches humans to exchange basic commands with their pups and “establish a target” so they stay on the board.

She encourages rewarding doggies with treats during surf class like Cheez Whiz, which works well in wet conditions.

Though instructing pooches takes patience, Neubarth says they listen well and never talk back.
