Spiritual Cheerleaders Change Stereotypes

SAN FRANCISCO (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A group of unique cheerleaders from San Francisco really put the “spirit” in “spiritual.”

The Shamanic Cheerleaders are socially conscious women who raise awareness on environmental and world issues through zany cheers, dance, song, and comedy.

Group member Cory “Afterchakra” Reddish – a doctor by day – says their form of “divine pep” breaks the mold and often cures people of their “cheerleader trauma,” helping them see past the stereotypes.

During their shows, the women make up alternate chants to classic tunes like “Hey Mickey” and spruce up familiar cheers.

Instead of chanting “Be Aggressive,” they say “Be Progressive,” and do call-response cheers like, “When I say solar, you say power.”

Reddish says they even have special pom poms, like ones made of cowtails from Africa and ones made of kale, which “went everywhere” while performing at an organic food festival.

Though the women have never cheered at a sporting event, they’d like to rah-rah sometime at a roller derby.
