‘Juneteenth’ Ensures Slavery Isn’t Forgotten

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – One man is whipping up a campaign to mark June 19 as an official slavery holiday.

Dr. Ronald Myers has made it his mission in life to make sure June 19, or “Juneteeth,” becomes a nationally recognized holiday, since it marks the day slavery was abolished in the United States.

Myers says this moment in history is important to honor with a day of observance, especially now that America has an African- American president who himself has shown support to the Juneteenth campaign.

Once Juneteenth becomes a real holiday, people can celebrate by dancing, jumping, and singing in the streets, and even by re- enacting the horrible time when blacks were second-class citizens.

Myers says, “People can do re-enactments of slavery. They can have someone dress in a general’s uniform having a man whipped. It’s a good way to make sure no one forgets why we’re celebrating the end of the black holocaust.”
