Artists Disguised Under ‘Urban Camouflage’

KARLSRUHE, Germany (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – If a pile of boxes starts walking around at Ikea, don’t worry. It’s only urban camouflaging.

German artists Sabina Keric and Yvonne Bayer created a new wave of art installations with Urban Camouflage, in which they create full body costumes out of items found in stores, much like the ones used by military snipers, and blend in with the items on display.

For example, they created a suit made entirely out of Ikea shopping bags, laid down in a large bin amongst other bags, and jumped up when any customers came near.

With Urban Camouflage, the artists get the chance to disappear for a moment and merge with the market they are at.

Keric says, “Most employees react humorously, but we’ve had some trouble with management. Some customers are interested and try to touch the costume, others get irritated and keep their distance. There are also some who ignore us completely. It seems like they don’t want to get irritated by us.”
