Hikers Challenged To Chug Ice Cream

PINE GROVE FURNACE, Pa. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Nothing fills you up after a thousand-mile hike like tons of ice cream.

Hikers making their way from Georgia to Maine through the 2,175-mile Appalachian trail are cooling off midway by taking the Half-Gallon Challenge at the Pinegrove Furnace General Store in Pine Grove Furnace, Pennsylvania.

Challengers must eat an entire half-gallon of ice cream, and those who finish win a wooden spoon that denotes them as members of the Half-Gallon Club.

Store manager Dan Ray says people try different strategies to make it into the cool, prestigious society.

He says, “Some just dig in while others let it melt for an hour then drink the ice cream. Some of them are so hungry from hiking all those miles they’ll do a whole gallon, then eat a hot dog and cheese fries.”

Ray advises challengers to steer clear of heavy flavors, like rocky road, and stick to neapolitan ice cream because “you get three tastes so you don’t get sick of it as quickly.”
