New Jersey Has Crabs

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The crabby claws are coming out in Ocean City, New Jersey, on August 6.

That’s when the 35th Annual Miss Crustacean Hermit Crab Beauty Pageant takes place, and this year, the stakes are higher than ever.

On top of the Cucumber Rind Cup trophy, a symbol of Crustacean comeliness, the pageant crabs are competing for a $35 cash prize, which could send the winner well on their way to a life in the lap of luxury.

Event organizer Matt Soifer explains, “Factoring in for inflation and the hermit crab lifestyle, $35 is equivalent to $35,000 in sand dollars.”

But prospective beauty queens will have to get creative to get to the cash.

Past winners have included “Crabapatra,” who was carried into the beauty pageant by toga clad owners, “Crabpunsel,” who flaunted her flowing locks, and “Pirates Of Crababbean,” a crusty, swashbuckling beauty.

Once the winner is crowned, they’ll take their bow down a flowery runway as the crowd sings “Here Comes Miss Crustacean.”

Soifer says every crab has a shot at the title, since, unlike other pageants, there are no divas, stage moms, or sabotage.
