Joe Mantegna Won’t Sing For The Troops

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Emmy-winning actor Joe Mantegna is saluting the American Armed Forces – but not singing for them.

On Sunday (May 25), Mantegna – star of Criminal Minds – is hosting The 2008 National Memorial Day Concert on PBS, a star-studded salute to the American Armed Forces held on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol.

Though many of his relatives served in the military, Mantegna’s childhood Memorial Day memories revolve around barbecues and “watching the Indianapolis 500,” and it took this honorable hosting gig to bring back meaning of the holiday.

He says, “We tend to lose sight of why it exists, but hosting this brought back the poignancy of what Memorial Day is about.”

Mantegna’s hosting duties involve him giving a dramatic reading to the patriotic crowd, and despite his musical background – his band once toured with rockers Chicago – he won’t be belting out any tunes.

He says, “They’ve got some incredible singers like Gladys Knight. They don’t need me!”
