Nigel Lythgoe: ‘Paula And Simon Make Me Sick’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – The constant, bitter bickering from the judges’ table on American Idol drives producer Nigel Lythgoe up the wall.

That’s the candid critique from Lythgoe, who by now is very familiar with the love/hate relationship between Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell on Idol.

Still, Lythgoe says the unpredictable nature of their stubborn friendship is something he’ll never quite understand.

He explains, “I think they fight out of pure boredom. They need something to do, so they start picking on each other. But it’s very strange. One day they’ll be totally in love, kissing each other, and the next day Simon will turn his back on Paula and she’ll turn up her nose for no reason. They make me sick sometimes!”

Lythgoe believes that after seven seasons of Idol, it’s only “natural” that Paula and Simon bicker, and it’s normal for them to drag Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest into the squabbles.

He says, “Randy usually smoothes things over, but Paula gets mad at him for having no edge or opinion. And all of the judges ride Ryan because they think he’s insincere. They’re a dysfunctional family, but it’s the fun of the fare.”

American Idol airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays on FOX.
