1970s Keyboard King Becomes A Captain

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Legendary music duo Captain & Tennille didn’t get their name by sailing the high seas.

That’s the tune from Daryl “Captain” Dragon who along with his wife Toni Tennille, had numerous hits in the 1970s, including the peppy pop tune, “Love Will Keep Us Together,” and admits he came up with his “Captain” gimmick out of pure boredom.

Dragon explains, “I played keyboard with the Beach Boys in the early 1970s and when you tour a lot, you get bored. One day I went to a war surplus store and bought myself a captain hat and the Beach Boys started introducing me as Captain Keyboard on stage just to change it up. The name just stuck.”

Dragon kept his skipper style, and when he formed Captain & Tennille with his wife, his Captain duds were taken to a whole new level.

Tennille recalls, “Our wardrobe designer would make captain hats for Daryl out of the most ridiculous fabrics to match our outfits. It’s embarrassing to think about the hideous hats!”

And although Captain has worn more hats than he can remember, his first commander cap holds some special – and stinky – memories.

He adds, “I found it in our garage recently, all oily and gross. It’s just awful, but I’ll keep it forever!”
