Kevin Nealon Puts In Work For Funny TV Commercials

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – When it comes to making funny TV commercials, comedian Kevin Nealon knows what it takes to score a laugh.

Nealon – best known for his nine-year run on Saturday Night Live and his current role on Weeds – is hosting the Funniest Commercials of the Year special airing on TBS December 26, and says that studying advertising and marketing in college, along with filming commercial spoofs for SNL in the 80s and 90s, taught him the rough ropes of the ad industry.

Nealon explains, “Those SNL ads were tedious because they took weeks to make. We’d shoot the commercials during the week and spend so much time on them that we wouldn’t have time to look over our actual scripts! It made me appreciate how hard advertisers work.”

Nealon says his favorite ads on SNL were those that were so good, viewers couldn’t tell if they were real or fake, like funnyman Phil Hartman’s notoriously nasty Colon Blow commercial.

But real TV ads make Nealon laugh too.

His current favorites are a series of commercials for a local car dealership that feature the “Trunk Monkey” – a tough monkey that jumps out of the trunks of cars at the push of a button to defend drivers from cops and road-raged commuters, and even helps one couple through childbirth.
