Thats the dirt from James Maguire, author of the biography Impresario: The Life and Times of Ed Sullivan (Ten Speed Press), who believes Sullivans square personality wouldnt hold up with todays TV titans.
Says Maguire: Sullivan was so incredibly stiff on stage. People watch entertainers like Jay Leno and David Letterman to watch them perform. Sullivan really had no personality.
But there was one thing Sullivan did well with his famous variety program, The Ed Sullivan Show.
Maguire says, Though he himself wasnt an entertainer, Sullivan knew how to entertain the American public. He understood the audience and came to represent the best of American culture.
Maguire also salutes Sullivans tenacity, despite his lack of talent.
He says, Sullivan was really obsessed with fame, but he couldnt do anything to make himself famous. He couldnt sing, or tell jokes, or anything. But he ended up succeeding in the entertainment business anyway.
