The Legend Of Charo’s ‘Cuchi-Cuchi’

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Perky Spanish Flamenco star, Charo, is known for signature phrase, “Cuchi- Cuchi,” and she owes her motto to a furry, four-legged friend.

According to Charo, her “Cuchi-Cuchi” catchphrase originated when she was just three years old and owned a little dog named “Cuchillo,” who used to wiggle when he was happy, which she tried to imitate.

Charo explains, “My nickname for Cuchillo was Cuchi- Cuchi, because I couldn’t pronounce his whole name. When he wiggled, it looked like he was dancing, and I would copy him and say, ‘Como, Cuchi, como Cuchi’ which means, ‘Like Cuchi, like Cuchi.’ I think the poor dog must’ve suffered from ticks or epilepsy, but everyone thought it was cute when I wiggled and said ‘Cuchi-Cuchi,’ and gave me candy. I realized I could make a business out of dancing and saying ‘Cuchi-Cuchi’ and it worked!”

And while Charo may be known for her dance moves, peppy personality, and dog’s nickname before her Flamenco expertise, she doesn’t mind her rowdy reputation.

She says, “Cuchi-Cuchi showed me the way to the bank and I’ll never be ashamed of it!”
