‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ Cast Gets Love From Potheads And Pregnant Women

NEW YORK (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – Welcome Back, Kotter was a show about a bunch of inner-city slackers, but cast member Ron Palillo says it was a favorite among 1970’s potheads and pregnant women.

Palillo – who played the lovable, dimwitted Arnold Horshack on the sitcom – says the cast would get tons of fanmail, but recalls that a few packages contained a little something extra.

Says Palillo: “A lot of people thought Kotter was a doper show, so they would send us little bits of pot to show us their appreciation – we couldn’t believe it!”

But stoner hook-ups weren’t Palillo’s favorite form of fanmail. In fact, a hilarious letter from a frenzied fan made him top dog among his co-stars John Travolta and Gabe Kaplan.

He explains, “I got this letter from a woman once that I’ll never forget. It said: Ron, I want you to be the father of my child and you don’t even have to do anything, I’m already pregnant. We laughed for hours about that one!”

But while the fan letters poured in, Palillo always kept himself grounded.

Palillo says, “Bobby Hegyes once told me, ‘We’re like the freakin’ Beatles, Ron!’ I joked back, ‘We’re not even the Monkees, Bobby!’”’

Welcome Back, Kotter is now available on DVD.
