‘Last Comic Standing’ Searches For A Universal Comedian

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – A good joke can transcend universal barriers – at least that’s what Last Comic Standing producer Peter Engel thinks.

Engel – whose fifth season of Last Comic Standing premieres June 13 – expanded this year’s search for the funniest comedian by not only auditioning folks in America, but also traveling to Canada, Australia, and London.

With the overseas search, Engel was reminded of just how “simple comedy is” and how humor transcends cultures.

Says Engel: “If something is funny, it’ll make you laugh no matter where you are in the world. As long as there’s no real language barrier, the jokes usually work out for everybody.”

Engel says the new worldly comedy contenders were hilarious, and in his words, “brought it every time.”

And while Australian comedy had a few more “regional differences,” Engel was surprised at how funny Canadian comics were.

He adds, “Auditions in Montreal were off the hook!”
