Melinda Doolittle Goes From Back-Up Singer To Spotlight Diva

LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – American Idol cast-off Melinda Doolittle enjoyed channeling her inner-diva on the show, but the former backup singer admits the Idol spotlight took some getting used to.

Doolittle – who was booted from the Idol semifinals this past Wednesday (May 16) – was criticized by Simon Cowell for lacking confidence when it came to her singing.

However, having been a backup singer for many years, Doolittle admits she was truly surprised and not faking her modesty when the judges constantly praised her pipes.

Says Doolittle: “Before Idol I was singing background for better singers than me and had to sound like everyone else. But finally getting to be in the limelight and showcase my own voice was really exciting and scary, so when the judges actually liked my voice I was surprised but honored. It was my way of adjusting to truly being in the spotlight.”

And while Doolittle is no longer a shy little background crooner, she will always relate to those who are in her words, “supporting singers.”

She adds, “I couldn’t have done anything without my backup singers on Idol. Those ladies were my rocks! They helped me sound good!”
