Cities Battle It Out To Be “Pierogy” Capital’

SHENANDOAH, Pa. (Wireless Flash - FlashNews) – There’s a heated competition going on between five cities in the Northeast U.S. over which one will be declared the Capital of the ‘‘Pierogy Pocket.”

For those not in the know, pierogies are potato-filled pastries that are commonly found in cities with large numbers of Eastern European immigrants.

The folks who make Mrs. T’s Pierogies say the Pierogy Pocket is defined as the area around Buffalo, New York, to Pittsburgh and as far west as Chicago.

Now, they’re trying to find the ‘‘capital” of this region and have narrowed it down to Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Providence, Rhode Island, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Garfield, New Jersey.

Mrs. T’s officials will donate $10,000 to the city that shows the most pierogy passion and, so far, Buffalo pierogy fans changed the lyrics of the George Michael song, ‘‘Faith,” to ‘‘Pierogies Are Great,” while those in Providence, Rhode Island, are proposing a ‘‘Pierogy Plaza” to honor the dish.

Folks can vote for their favorite city at and the winner will be announced the first week of November.
